Russia, 21, Aug 2020- Ericsson in its latest series of 5G announcements, also announced last Tuesday, i.e. on 18, Aug 2020, that its 25000 5G ready base stations have been deployed by Tele2 in Russia. Ericsson helped in upgrading Tele2’s infrastructure across Russia in just 18 months. This upgrade has increased network performance and capacity by a factor of 1.7.
Tele2 selected Ericsson to upgrade its network under a deal which was signed in 2019. This 5-year deal which was signed at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona mentioned about the deployment of 50,000 5G ready Ericsson Radio Systems across the country to modernise Tele2’s network. And as discussed in the deal, this update has covered all 27 regions of Russia. Earlier in August 2019, Ericsson and Tele2 launched Russia’s first 5G zone on Tele2’s network in Central Moscow. This zone was launched in Tverskaya Street, which is the busiest part of the Russian capital.
Head of Ericsson in Russia, Sebastian Tolstoy further explained that with this deployment, Tele2’s subscribers will be able to use high-speed mobile internet services in high quality. He also said that all of Ericsson’s equipment in Russia can be upgraded to 5G with the help of remote software installation and operators can launch news services as soon as they the appropriate licenses. There’s an Ericsson Academy in Moscow which also houses its 5G Innovation Hub which gives Russian providers with an opportunity to test various innovations on 5G and IOT networks.
Ericsson has been in news related to its 5G platform all through the year. Recently, Ericsson achieved a milestone when it secured its 100th commercial 5G agreement with Telekom Slovenije. Latin America’s first 5G network was introduced by using Ericsson Spectrum Sharing partnership with Claro Brasil. In the US, Ericsson delivered its first US-manufactured base station to Verizon. Softbank also chose Ericsson’s cloud-native, dual-node 5G Core for its standalone 5G services. In the middle-east, Omantel chose Ericsson for its 5G expansion. As a result of these agreements and deals, Ericsson’s second-quarter sales were SEK 55.6 billion. Its Gross Margin excluding restructuring charges improved 38.2% with network sales increasing by 4% year-on-year. Operating income charges improved from SEK 3.9 billion to SEK 4.5 billiom. This operating income is calculated by excluding restructuring charges.
The net sales for the year 2019 for Ericsson were SEK 227.2 billion increasing from SEK 210.8 billion in 2018. The Operating Income for 2019 however, posted a loss of SEK 10.6 billion.
