Hangzhou, China, Sept. 17, 2020 - Alibaba Group Holding Limited (Alibaba), on Sept. 16, 2020, made an announcement revealing its New Manufacturing model after unveiling its Xunxi Digital Factory (Xunxi).
Xunxi, the Hangzhou based factory is powered by Alibaba’s cloud computing infrastructure along with IoT. It offers SMEs a completely digitized end-to-end manufacturing supply chain. This allows production that is demand-driven and fully customized. With the digitization of China’s over RMB 30 trillion manufacturing markets, smaller businesses and manufacturers will benefit by allowing them to be able to respond better and faster to the changing needs of the customers.
Alibaba crossed another milestone with the introduction of New Manufacturing in the implementation of the “Five New” strategy. This strategy was introduced by founder Jack Ma in 2016. The strategy comprises of New Manufacturing, New Retail, New Technology, New Finance, and New Energy.
Initially, apparel was decided as the starting point for Xunxi. Apparel is a sector which has lengthy production cycles along with high inventory levels and has been a problem for small and large players for a long time. The new factory is powered by new technologies which include automated in-house logistics, real-time resourcing, process and cost planning, and Xunxi’s manufacturing operating system. This helps the factory produce small-batch orders at reasonable costs along with shorter delivery times. It also increases the manufacturing ability from 25% to 55%.
The World Economic Forum (WEF), on Sept. 14, 2020, designated the Xunxi Digital Factory a Lighthouse. This was a part of its Global Lighthouse Network. The network is a community of top global companies that have succeeded in adopting Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies at scale. Xunxi’s achievements have brought a fully digitalized New Manufacturing model to life by combining powerful digital technologies with consumer insights.
In the quarter that ended on Jun. 30, 202, Alibaba’s revenue was RMB 153,751 million which was an increase of 34% year-over-year. The total annual active consumers of China’s retail marketplaces touched 742 million which was an increase of 16 million from the 12-month period that ended Mar. 31, 2020.
