Whitley, United Kingdom, August 6, 2020: One of the largest automotive manufacturers of the United Kingdom, Jaguar Land Rover, announced that the Company developed a software to teach autonomous cars how to reduce motion sickness. The intelligent software application, which combines 20,000 virtually-simulated and real-world test miles, adapts the driving style of the driverless vehicles of the future using advanced machine learning, so as to provide the customers a comfortable and refined ride.

Jaguar Land Rover, a subsidiary of the Indian automotive company, Tata Motors, is known for its investments in research for the development of advanced automotive systems. During the FY2019-2020, the Company invested around USD 2.01 billion for research and developments which constituted to 54.3% of investment spending. The Company also initiated several advancements in automotive technology, such as the development of contactless touchscreen in in-car infotainment systems that help to fight bacteria and viruses amidst the global pandemic crisis. The Company, in its initial phase of the project of anti-motion sickness software, developed the ‘wellness score’ matrix which was anticipated to significantly reduce the impact of motion sickness by up to 60%.

Motion sickness, which is a common condition in people, and which affects about 1 in 3 people, according to the statistics by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, is often caused when the eyes observe different information from that sensed by the skin, inner ear or the body. The anti-motion sickness software by Jaguar Land Rover, utilizes all the contributory factors to motion sickness, including braking, accelerating, and lane positioning, and optimizes them to avoid inducing nausea in passengers.

The chief medical officer of Jaguar Land Rover, Dr. Steve Iley, stated in his comments that mobility is rapidly changing and that the Company needs to attain its goal of zero congestion and zero accidents by harnessing the power of autonomous vehicles. Moreover, he also stated that by solving the problem of motion sickness, the Company looks forward to unlocking the great potential of the technology and especially for the passengers who would be able to use the traveling time for working, reading, or relaxing.
