Jan 16, 2020, 16:00 /Comserve / -- Nestle Purina’s decision to cancel 13-ounce food cans has left many cat lovers fuming with a couple of online petitions asking Purina to reconsider its decision.
The new year started off on a sad note with disappointed cat owners and rescuers trying to share their concerns online regarding the sudden decision of Nestle Purina to discontinue 13-ounce Purina Friskies brand cat food cans. A couple of petitions filed on the website Change.org are bringing in the much-needed support from cat lovers in the U.S including those from outside the U.S.
The website of Purina contained a notice that stated that Friskies cat food and treats have been discontinued and Purina was trying to express their regrets in order to console the consumers for their inability to continue with their offering of 13-ounce cans.
One of the petitioners had shared the letter from Purina which confirmed the discontinuance of the product. Purina had stated in its letter that it was sorry for not being able to continue their 13-ounce Purina Friskies brand cat food cans which they had felt was a hard decision taken by them, as they had been focusing their efforts towards expanding their Friskies varieties for 2020. Purina also added that they are still manufacturing those flavours in 5.5 ounce can size.
One of the petitioners, Denise Heiserman had commented that this change would have adverse consequences for the future for those who have been fostering cats and kittens including cat owners and those who have continued to feed community cats. He further requested not to discontinue the 13-ounce cans.
Kim Pratt, another petitioner had commented that they wouldn’t need 5000 more varieties at the trade-off of higher expense. Moreover, he added that the affordable 13-ounce cans are especially important for the lower-income cat owners who may not afford the high costs. Further, he urged the company to reverse their decision, as the consumers’ needs have been largely ignored by the company.
Debra Smith, one of the petitioners had stated that the decision of Purina to end 13-ounce cat food was a devastating blow for several cat owners, including the people who were involved in its rescue. She further mentioned that the product in question was cat owners’ and cat rescuers’ tried-and-true, go to cat food. Moreover, she also commented that there are other companies that make large cans and that they were not interested to purchase from such companies, but if they had no alternative, they would have to choose large cans.
