First Rapid Mining Vessel For Republic Of China’s (ROC) Navy Launched By Taiwan

Bronx, United States, Aug 10, 2020, 07:00 /Comserve / -- A launching ceremony was held at the premises of Lungteh Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for the first Min Jiang-class rapid mining vessel that was designed specifically for the Navy of the Republic of China.

Taipei, August 7, 2020 – On August 4th, a launching ceremony was held at the premises of Lungteh Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. for the first Min Jiang-class rapid mining vessel that was designed specifically for the Navy of the Republic of China. The Taiwanese shipbuilder, which received the pennant number FMLB-1, and which preferably stands for Fast Mine Laying Boat, had its keel-laying ceremony on the 24th of May 2019. The vessel is planned for delivery by the end of the current year.

The Taiwanese shipbuilding company has been working on several shipbuilding projects, including the new CTV for the Taiwanese Yunlin project. The development of the rapid mining vessel was part of the domestic defense program of Taiwan. According to the plan designed in the defense program included building four rapid mine-laying ships and three Tuo Chiang-class missile corvettes. All these defense procurement was planned according to the government’s need for producing more of its own weapon systems and emphasizing on the same.

During the keel-laying ceremony, the ministry of defense of Taiwan announced that the delivery of the first ships by the Navy was scheduled in late 2021, while the last of the batch was scheduled to be taken in 2025. The statement also further added with the addition of these ships, the Taiwanese defense system would greatly be enhanced and that they would have a strong mine fighting capacity against the communist army.

The rapid mining vessels are designed in such a way that the ships can handle any amphibious vehicles that try to enter Taiwanese land. Moreover, the vessels are designed to have a dimension of:

  • Length: 41 meters
  • Width: 8.8 meters
  • Draft: 1.7 meters

Additionally, the vessels are designed to attain a maximum speed of 14 knots along with a full load displacement of 347 tons. These vessels are also fitted with a gun mount of variant 20mm T75, and further possesses two numbers of T74 machine guns with the characteristics of manned 7.62 x 51 mounts.
