Avatarin Inc. or ANA Holdings Inc. (ANAHD) and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) of Tokyo, Japan have together announced their project involving the world’s first space avatar that is being released on the International Space Station (ISS). The project, known as AVATAR-X project, is collaboration between both the ANAHD and JAXA under the JAXA Space Innovation through Partnership and Co-creation initiative or the J-SPARC.
The space avatar will be deployed on the ISS while it is orbiting the planet at a speed of 8 kilometer per second and at an altitude of 400 km. This space avatar system would consist of a real-world robot that can be operated by a human, who can experience the environment in space by hearing, seeing, feeling and interacting in real-time. This is made possible through the technology that allows the sensation of touch, sight and sound, by the system which is then detected by the operator, i.e., the human controlling the device. The robotic avatar technology created as a part of this project is expected to result in acceleration of various space-based businesses that aim to bring human access to the space through various innovative approaches.
ANA Holdings Inc. will be responsible for the deployment of this space avatar inside Kibo, the experimental module of Japan at ISS. Through a window installed near the Kibo module, the users or the operators would be able to experience the real-time view of space while operating the device. All of this would be possible from inside a public and non-JAXA facility located in Tokyo, Japan.
The AVATAR-X program was launched in September 2018 by JAXA and ANAHD and consists of about 30 other partners, including private and public organizations.
