A research advisory board has also been specifically authorized by JFFD, that would offer the necessary guidance and support related to the fresh pet food research. Many professionals including specialists having the certification from the board would constitute the advisory board team. The advisory board team comprises of veterinary professionals and specialists who are certified by the Board. At least eight (8) board-certified specialists are anticipated to be part of the entire team comprising of twelve (12) members.

Dr. Oscar E. Chavez, Chief Medical Officer, business graduate (MBA), including a BVetMed and a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons stated that from the beginning, it had never been sufficient to just sell dog food. He further added that the primary focus was to ensure the presence of a healthy pet population, which is the reason for a good investment in research, so that the right questions can be asked. Currently, Chavez who is working as a professor in California State Polytechnic University located at Pomona had earlier been associated with the University as the director of Animal and Veterinary Science department a few years ago had assisted in the organization of feeding trails of JFFD.

JFFD had financed two pieces of pet nutrition research in the year 2019, including getting published a study on digestibility in Translational Animal Science, an official journal of the American Society of Animal Science. The year 2020 is expected to witness the publication of another digestibility study in the journal.

Shawn Buckley, founder of JFFD commented that the company has come a long way, and the fact that formation of advisory board was a witness to such developments. Moreover, he stated that the vets were not completely sure about providing recommendation about their company in 2010 at the time of launch of the company. However, he added that with the company having planned a vigorous research for future, especially with the publication of three papers that are lying under their belt currently, there has been higher interest shown by vets, who are keen to not only recommend but also partner with them.

It is highly anticipated that the funds that have been allocated would find their way primarily onto canine nutrition research. Dr. Dan Su, (MS, DVM), a staff nutritionist is expected to lead for such research initiatives that are under way for 2020.
