Bronx, United States, Aug 04, 2020, 02:00 /Comserve / -- Picocom has announced that for its forthcoming 5G small cell distributed unit (DU), it has selected the AndesCore™ N25F RISC-V 32-bit core platform.
Hsinchu, Taiwan, August 4, 2020 – Picocom has announced that for its forthcoming 5G small cell distributed unit (DU), it has selected the AndesCore™ N25F RISC-V 32-bit core platform. This platform is also known to be integrated with the AE350 peripherals platform. The prime goal of the deal is to open up the supply chain by the disaggregation of 5G radio access networks (RAN), which will enable new vendors to enter the market and compete. The concept, termed as ‘open RAN’, is championed by Piacom to meet the challenges brought by 5G small cells. With the addition of the performance efficient cores by Andes, the desired goal of bringing efficiency, flexibility, and performance for the 5G small cells can be addressed.
The President of Picocom, Mr. Peterson, stated that the compact size of the cores by Andes would allow Picocom to use 32 of them in the form of two clusters and allow processing of data throughputs. He further stated that the speed of the data throughput is expected to reach line rates of up to 25Gbps for packet header processing.
For floating-point intensive applications, the RISC-V core N25F has been proved to be an outstanding solution as it can control high-speed tasks. The Executive Vice President and CTO of Andes Technology, Dr. Charlie Su, stated in his statement that his Company is delighted as the strength of N25F has been recognized by Picocom. Andes Technology, a leader in designing innovative high-performance/low-power processor cores, has developed the N25F RISC-V 32-bit core for use in 5G small cell distribution units.
Headquartered in Hangzhou, China, Picocom is a semiconductor company that was founded in the year 2018. The company designs and markets open RAN standard-compliant baseband SoCs. It is also known to market carrier-grade software products for 5G small cell infrastructure.
