Korea, September 29, 2020: Global technology leader, Samsung Electronics has announced today that it has collaborated with Microsoft to strengthen its end-to-end, private cloud-based 5G network solution. Through this partnership, both the companies aim to drive the virtualization of 5G solutions by installing Samsung’s virtualized Core, virtualized RAN, along with Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) technologies on the Microsoft Azure platform.

The partnership also aims to accelerate innovation that reduces the barriers for the introduction of private 5G networks in businesses — including retail outlets, entertainment venues, such as stadiums, and smart factories. Via a cloud-based solution to the market, businesses seek to gain greater cost-efficiencies in 5G installations.

The introduction of fully virtualized 5G solutions on a cloud infrastructure allows significant enhancements for telecom carriers and businesses in the scalability and versatility of networks. The Senior Vice-President and Global Head of Product Strategy, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, Wonil Roh, is excited to work with Microsoft and said that the association would help to deliver an efficient 5G solution that leverage opportunities in the private network sector. He further added that the association with Microsoft would help to bring a transformation in the next-generation communications, and Samsung would continue to explore the limits of innovation in 5G and beyond.

In its latest financial statement, Samsung Electronics reported a net profit of KRW 5.56 trillion during 2Q 2020 as compared to the previous year’s net profit of the same period that was KRW 5.18 trillion, a growth by 7.3% Y-O-Y. Additionally, since Samsung is currently working to explore 6G connectivity, the Research & Development expense for the second quarter also increased by 5.4% to KRW 5.22 trillion this year as compared to the previous year which was KRW 4.95 trillion in 2Q 2019.

A few days ago, Samsung announced the launch of a new integrated 5G mmWave small cell, called Link Cell, to provide its indoor users with smooth and enhanced 5 G experiences.
