San Francisco, California, August 13, 2020: Twitter, an American microblogging and social networking company has recently introduced a new feature that allows users to control who can reply to their tweets. After being in the testing phase for a few months, Twitter has finally rolled out its new feature to all its users globally.

The aim of this feature is to give more control to the users over their conversations and give a sense of comfort level while posting their thoughts on sensitive issues. This new feature setting is available to all Android and iOS users around the world. According to the company, people can now make changes in their settings so that unwanted replies don’t get in the way of meaningful conversation. The process works in such a way that before sending a tweet the user will get three options to choose from i.e., ‘Everyone’ (default setting), ‘Only people you follow’ or ‘Only the people you mention’. Once the setting is finalized, the user can compose a tweet and post it using the ‘Tweet tab’. The reply icon will be grayed out for people who cannot reply.

While the new ‘reply-limiting’ feature has certainly provided an advantage to the user but there are certain loopholes that are associated with this feature. The people who cannot reply to a particular tweet can still view the post, like and share and can also re-tweet with comments. Also, once the tweet is posted, the user cannot change its reply settings. Another disadvantage will be more fake news will be floated which can go viral and incite panic.

Twitter stated that the new feature has been designed keeping in mind the public figures including actors, politicians, and journalists among others, who are vulnerable to unwanted attacks on the social media platform. By having this feature, the amount of cyber abuse will be reduced and offer a safe digital space by keeping the trollers away.

Earlier, Twitter suffered a very public and disappointing security glitch due to which it had to rebuild its ad server. The rebuild was completed in the second quarter during which it announced its quarterly report. The Q2 result reported a revenue of USD 683 million which was down by 19% Y-o-Y while the total costs and expenses grew by 25% Y-o-Y to USD 957 million. According to the Q1 report, Twitter generated a revenue of USD 808 million which is 3% up Y-O-Y with significantly reduce in expense due to hiring freeze.

Last year, Instagram, another social media platform, also introduced this feature to restrict any bullying and harassment on its platform.
