Lake Buena Vista, Florida, USA; 7, Aug 2020- A USD 300 million fund was announced by the NBA and NBPA for the first ‘NBA Foundation’ which will work for the economic growth and empowerment of the Black community in the team markets along with communities across the US and Canada. All 30 NBA team owners would contribute a combined value of USD 30 million each year over the next 10 years to fund this foundation.

This foundation is created to develop more opportunities for the Black community. The league said that this charity would be public and this foundation will work towards deepening of NBA family’s commitments to social justice and racial equality. According to the NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts, a framework would be provided by this foundation to stay committed and accountable to the core principles of equality and justice. The main focus will be on driving economic empowerment for Black communities by providing them with employment and career advancements.

It was after the death of George Floyd which led to several protests around the country. NBA also supported the season with ‘Black Lives Matter’ painted on the court in. During the first game of the 2019-20 NBA season, all NBA players and the coaches knelt during the national anthem as a mark of protest and to support the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. The league and its players have been supporting this movement and commenting on it since the season’s start. This fund will represent the real change everyone has been talking about. The NBA even allowed its players to wear social justice-related messages if they want at the back of their jerseys. The ‘Black Lives Matter’ will be featured on the courts for the rest of the season.

The league finds a huge representation by the Black community and coming up of this initiative is a good step forward. With the kind of representation and the resources that the league has, the league has put the right foot forward in order to support its core principles. It has the power to conceive, implement and support those substantive policies on a national level.
