California, USA, 25, Aug 2020- The North American Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) has announced Verizon as its official 5G sponsor for its 10th season. Financial terms or the terms of the deal were not disclosed during the announcement.
Psyonix, makers of Rocket League signed this deal with Verizon for its recently started North American competitive structure. Psyonix while announcing this deal said that they needed a partner who could stay up to speed with RLCS because of the fast-paced and rapid changes which are taking the series by storm this year. In Verizon, they got what they wanted as they are America’s most awarded network and know a thing or two in delivering consistent results.
Hosted by Psyonix, Rocket League Championship Series (RLCS) is a premier esports league in Rocket League. This season of RLCS has represented a very dramatic change in its structure for its 10th season as it replaced the previously league-based format with a more open events circuit approach. Earlier, in July 2020 Psyonix signed an agreement with the premier gaming lifestyle festival DreamHack to be the production partner.
Verizon has also been investing a lot in the esports world. In June 2020, it announced a partnership with Riot Games and became the official 5G network for its League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). It also partnered with Dignitas to launch America’s first 5G esports training facility in Verizon’s Los Angeles 5G Lab. To keep the community connected during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, it started Pay It Forward LIVE. It supported small businesses by organising weekly gaming and music streaming series. In addition to all of this, it called on US-based game developers to create a game with its theme as football using Verizon’s 5G Ultra-Wideband and called it as the “5G NFL Mobile Gaming Challenge”.
Esports business has been on a rise for the past few years. According to a report published in Forbes in 2019, the esports industry has already exceeded revenues of over USD 1 billion and if it continues to rise at the same rate it’ll garner revenues amounting to USD 2.3 billion. With an audience of over 443 million around the world, it is already ahead of American rugby and football combined and is only expected to grow over the years.
