U.S.A., Sept. 18, 2020 -- According to an announcement made on Sept. 17, 2020, Willamette University and the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) have signed an agreement. The PNCA, which is Northwest’s oldest professional school of art and design will become an integral part of the region’s premier liberal arts university.
The two institutions will pursue more permanent collaborative engagements due to their merger. This will be done through academic programs and shared administrative support along with creating cost-controlling efficiencies.
The agreement is expected to receive regulatory and accreditor approvals in 2021. PNCA will remain an independent college and a part of Willamette University according to the agreement. PNCA will not only maintain its name, but also its faculty and campus in Portland. PNCA’s Center for Contemporary Art & Culture along with its other academic centers and collections will merge with Willamette University according to the agreement.
PNCA will join the affiliated Claremont School of Theology and Tokyo International University of America. PNCA is the fourth college within the university that will not only join the Willamette University College of Law, College of Arts & Sciences, but also the Atkinson Graduate School of Management.
A foundation for new thought and expression in subjects including racial and social justice, climate change, and health will be built as the merger will deepen connections among art, design, liberal arts, and sciences. PNCA students will get access to the entire range of curricular offerings which will include business and science courses at Willamette. They will also benefit from its presence in policymaking and government in Salem. At the same time, Willamette students will benefit from the offerings of visual arts and design which are provided by PNCA.
According to U.S. News and World Report, Willamette University was ranked the best in the Pacific Northwest owing to its economic diversity in its 2021 rankings. At the same time, Willamette ranked 72 among 233 arts and science institutes nationally.
